TRAVEL TIPS

Safety and Precautions

Bairro Alto's streets are filled with the sounds of daily life: children scuffle amid the drying laundry, women carry huge bundles from shop to shop, and old men occupy the doorways of barrooms. The neighborhood has always had a reputation as being rather rough-and-ready, and there are still back alleys, particularly in its northern reaches, where it would be unwise to venture after dark. On the whole, however, it's safe to walk around; indeed, the Bairro Alto has more bars, restaurants, fado clubs, and discos than any other district.
